Summer of the Road Trip – 1st Stop, Vermont

Summer 2020 has motivated us to explore a few new local destinations. Cue Vermont. While this state isn’t new to us (my husband and I got married in Manchester and we’ve been skiing Stratton for nearly 25 years) it’s not a state we visit as often during the summer, until now.

We spent the 4th of July weekend with friends in Stratton, which consisted of non-stop outdoor activities. Hiking the mountain, playing tennis, swimming at one of the many clear water lakes or ponds, cliff diving, golfing, and eating great food along the way. In case you’re heading to the green mountain state yourself, here is a list of my favorite things to do. This state is just as enjoyable, if not more than, once the snow has melted and the crisp cool air and waters await. See below for my list of recommendations.

Things to Do:

Pack a picnic lunch and take the gondola to the top of Stratton mountain. Hike to the historic fire tower, or explore one of the many mountain trails at the summit.

Cliff diving at the Marble Quarry.

Swimming at Snowmakers Pond. Make sure to rent paddle boards or kayaks in advance.

Mountain biking on Stratton Mountain.

Rope swinging at Emerald Lake State Park.

Attend fly fishing school through Orvis.

Visit the Manchester Farmers Market. Open Thursdays.

Outdoor Dining:

Honeypie – the best burgers and shakes in a restored gas station.

Mulligans – super fresh sushi on Stratton Mountain.

Dutton Berry Stand – great homemade soft serve maple ice cream and strawberry picking.

Cilantro – authentic Mexican street food – yummy tacos and burritos.

The Copper Grouse – great VT brunch in the beautifully designed Taconic hotel.

JJ Hapgood – delicious breakfast, salads and pizza.

Knit tank top is from BB Dakota. Linked here. Perfect for a cool summer night.
